How to reach Zavala
How to reach Zavala
The largest number of tourists arrives by car. Two ferry ports exist on the island, one which links Split and Starigrad, and one which links Drvenik and Sućuraj. Ferry schedules are available on www.jadrolinija.hr or by phone +385 21 338 333.
If you take the ferry to Starigrad, you will only need to take the 18 kilometers long road to Zavala. After disembarking from the ferry, turn left in the direction of Jelsa (12 kms). Do not turn left and enter the town of Jelsa. Turn right to Zavala (7 km). From there follow the partly narrow and winding island road through olive groves and vineyards, through the picturesque village of Pitve until you reach the unique tunnel which connects the northern and southern sides of the island of Hvar.
If you take the ferry to Sućuraj, continue on the rather challenging road toward Jelsa (53 km). Do not enter the town of Jelsa, but turn left at the crossroads to Zavala (6 km), and all the way to the tunnel.
Even though one may think that the tunnel is a passage through hell, paradise awaits at the other end.
